As someone from an underrepresented or disadvantaged background, it is only natural to feel less prepared at the outset of your journey to the bar compared to your more privileged peers – who tend to have received greater access to relevant skill-enhancing opportunities from a much younger age.
At Raise The Bar, we aim to contribute to the ongoing efforts to level the playing field in becoming a barrister – a profession notorious for favouring those of a more fortunate socio-economic background.
To level the playing field, we must first observe it.
What is it that owes itself to the success of those disproportionately favoured?
On the one hand, is the quality possessed by these individuals – the raw skills in communication, written and oratorical.
On the other, is the quality of network, the ‘who’ – as opposed to ‘what’ – you know, not only useful for securing jobs directly, but also for the calibre of advice in the meantime.
Through the activities, events and schemes hosted by Raise The Bar, members will be able to capitalise on a plethora of opportunities designed to advance skills which have forever been distributed selectively amongst society’s better-off.
‘Raise The Bar’ reflects not only our commitment to raising the standards set with regard to equal representation and opportunity at the bar, but, equally, to raising the bar of quality amongst its members.
We welcome you to join our supportive network, always striving to become better at what we do.
